Narrow Interview - Blazel

by Kara Guillaume

Who is Blazel? He is an enthusiastic and driven 31-year-old local hip-hop artist and rapper. While he was born in Atlanta, GA, Blazel moved to Gainesville at the age of five and has been a native here ever since. The rapper has been dedicated to his music for the past 10 years and hopes to increase his audience and spread positivity in years to come. In this interview, Blazel talks about how he got started in music and where he gets his inspiration from.

KG: How did you get into making music? Where did your passion start?

Blazel: I’ve been listening to R&B music from the 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s for as long as I can remember. I’ve always been a goofball and lover of music, which is what drew me to becoming an artist. My great-granddad was a blues player in New Orleans, so I believe some of my passion for music stems from that as well.

KG: How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard your songs before?

Blazel: Although I’m from the south, I would definitely say that my music has more of a west-coast influence. I love the sound of trumpets and pianos. My songs can be compared to a speech by a motivational speaker. I sing about my life experiences and encourage people to live their lives as freely as possible.

KG: Who are some of your biggest musical influences and inspirations?

Blazel: Tupak, Snoop Dogg, and Outkast are for sure some of my biggest inspirations; but really anything from the early ages, meaning music from the first wave of classic hip hop, like Jay-Z for example. My music is very similar to that. I relate a lot to the reality and authenticity of the music back then. Nowadays, a lot of stuff is made up but I try to keep it real all the time. What you see is what you get.

KG: If you had to pick an artist to collaborate with, who would it be and why?

Blazel: Definitely Snoop Dog or Devin The Dude, just because of the type of music they have. It would be a blessing to grace the stage with either of them.

KG: Where do you hope your career will go in the future?

Blazel: I hope to get to a point where I can find peace and be able to provide for my friends and family by doing music. I hope to continue making my own music, be my own boss and remain authentic.

KG: Do you have any upcoming music or projects on the way?

Blazel: I just recently dropped a single and music video with my boy One.Will titled “Champagne Musik.” I also plan to drop another single next month and will be touring Miami in April.
