Keba Williams

Expressing the vulnerability that comes with falling in love, we spoke with local singer, songwriter, and recording artist Keba Williams about her latest song and video for “Somebody.”

Williams says the song is about her now-husband but was written before they were even engaged, right after she got her first guitar.

“I wanted to write a song that expressed… that I felt he was the person I was going to marry. So, that emotion is intense,” Williams told me. “The song is about continuing in this relationship knowing that I have this feeling that this person is the one for me... It captures this vulnerable emotion.”

The release date for the video, November 9th, was chosen carefully as it is their wedding anniversary, and while her husband was present for the video shoot, she is waiting to show him the video with the rest of us.

“He was a big part of me being able to see it through,” Williams said of her husband’s support.

The video has a girl-power feel to it, with an all-female staff bringing Williams’s vision to life.

“I think that, as exciting as marriage is… there have been moments I was scared I would lose myself…,” Williams said. “The filming of this, it was really important for me to capture that essence that, as women, we get to follow our dreams, whether that dream includes love or career or whatever that case may be.”

When it came to hair, make up and the dress in the video, Williams said she went a more simplistic route for her actual wedding, but took the shoot as a chance to fantasize and “live out loud.”

Originally from Trinidad, Williams said she grew up participating in a number of musical activities, from playing classical music to musical theater, but said she didn’t think music could actually be a lifelong career until she moved to South Florida and took up music as a second degree in college.

After getting an internship at a music studio, Williams said she was able to learn more about songwriting and music production. There, she met a producer who helped her write original songs and went on to perform all over South Florida and eventually traveled to Europe and did festivals in the Caribbean.

Now living in St. Augustine, Williams says she is looking forward to building more connections and expanding her reach.
